Youjo Senki is an anime series that successfully combines the isekai and military genres with an evil and fun protagonist. So why is there no sequel so far, and will we ever get Youjo Senki Season 2?

Without the second season, we will never learn if Tanya will ever manage to secure the comfortable life she aims for or if Being X will ultimately make her acknowledge his existence.

The only way to continue the story after the anime without a second season would be to read the source material, but most people will never do that. Watching anime is just what most people prefer to do.

The problem is that Youjo Senki Season 2 didn’t get officially announced yet, and we don’t know what the chances are that another season of The Saga of Tanya the Evil will get green-lit.

How Can We Figure Out If There Will Be Youjo Senki Season 2?

In the last few years, I did look into hundreds of anime series because I was curious why some of them got a sequel, and if they didn’t, what was the reason behind that.

The most important thing I learned was that the clue if there will be a sequel is usually in either the source material, popularity, or sales information.

I will show you the information that I examined in 3 quick parts and tell you if you should expect that Youjo Senki season 2 will get announced in 2020.

Part 1: Source Material Information For Youjo Senki Season 2

The source material information is vital because most anime series get adapted from an existing property like manga, games, light novels, or even visual novels.

For Youjo Senki, the source material is the light novel.

There are two essential pieces of information we need to analyze. The first one is if the story is still ongoing in 2020. If the story already ended, it would make it harder for the sequel to get green-lit. That doesn’t mean it can’t get a sequel because Konosuba Season 3 will happen, and that series already concluded.

The second thing we need to explore is how many books got used for the first season of Youjo Senki and the movie.

Sometimes, a sequel can take years to get announced because the anime adaptation did catch up with the source material. One Punch Man Season 3 is an excellent example of a sequel that will take a while because of that.

How many volumes of Youjo Senki are there?

There are currently twelve light novel volumes of Youjo Senki released in Japan. There is also manga for The Saga of Tanya the Evil that currently has 18 volumes published.

Is Youjo Senki still ongoing?

The Youjo Senki light novels and manga are still ongoing. The latest volume of the light novel by the author Carlo Zen got released in Japan on February 20, 2020.

The author wrote two books in 2018 and one in 2019. In 2020 it’s so far only one new volume.

Which light novels does the anime of Youjo Senki cover?

The first season of the Youjo Senko anime used volumes 1-3, and the movie did adapt volume 4. That means light novel volume 5 continues after where the movie ended.

Part 2: Sales & Profit Information For Youjo Senki Season 2

In this part of the article, we will focus on examing the profit that the series and movie made. If the profit was weak or the movie did bomb in the box-office, that could make a sequel just not viable. Akatsuki no Yona Season 2 is an excellent example of a sequel that didn’t happen because there just wasn’t enough profit.

What we will look at is both the profit from the anime tv series and the movie. The fact that there is a movie for Youjo Senko means the series is profitable enough for that. Let’s hope it did better than the film for Goblin Slayer because it bombed and sank the chances of Goblin Slayer Season 2 getting green-lit.

Youjo Senki Blu-Ray sales

The Youjo Senko Blu-Ray sales are around 7,100 copies average per volume. For 2017 and a niche series like Youjo Senki, I would say that it is an incredible number.

Good Blu-Ray sales aren’t that necessary in 2020, but they can give a massive boost for a sequel probability. Well, unless you are Accel World Season 2 because even with high BD sales, it so far didn’t happen.

Youjo Senki Light Novel sales

Volume 11 of Youjo Senki was released on February 20, 2019, and sold approximately 25,000 copies. The latest light novel volume 12 that got released in 2020 sold around 22,000 copies.

Twenty-five thousand copies sold per volume is pretty low for a light novel with an anime adaptation, but I heard the manga is doing better, so let’s hope that’s the case.

Fun-fact is that Youjo Senki has the worst-selling light novels from the Isekai Quartet crossover. If you are curious, Overlord is the highest with around 230,000 copies per volume sold, so no wonder that Overlord Season 4 will get announced.

Youjo Senki manga sales

The Youjo Senki manga is selling a little better than the light novels. The latest volume 18 sold around 70,000 copies. I expected it would be more than 100,000, like in the case of Wise Man’s Grandchild.

The manga sales are why I still think there is some reason to suspect that Wise Man’s Grandchild season 2 can happen even with low light novel sales. I was hoping that will be the case for Youjo Senki as well.

Youjo Senki Merchandise

Eighteen figures available for Youjo Senki, and all of them are just Tanya. I was expecting that Viktoriya will have at least one. There are also around 180 goods available for this series.

Normally I would consider this a weak number, but in the case of The Saga of Tanya the Evil, I can see why merch is low. It’s a niche series that has only one popular character.

If you look at this in that way, it’s doing much better than popular series like Noragami. That series has only four figures and 450 goods after two seasons. The low amount of merch is part of the reason that Noragami Season 3 didn’t get green-lit so far.

Youjo Senki Movie Box Office

The box-office for the Youjo Senki movie is around 400 Million Yen, so that’s approximately 3,5 million dollars. Blu-Ray sales for the film are more than 20,000 copies sold, which is impressive.

The movie did a great job improving the chances that we will get another season for this anime.

Youjo Senki Games sales

There is a smartphone game that will get released in 2020 for Youjo Senki. I will update this later with info on how well it did.

The above are just the main methods an anime adaptation can make money. I won’t post all of them here because the rest are usually only a small part of the profits.
